<body>The theme of this meeting was to discuss how supplementary schools (madrasahs and after school clubs) could work in partnership with the mainstream education sector.

Keynote speaker Tahir Alam of the Al Hijra Trust spoke about how important it was for young Muslims to practice their religion at school as well as at home. He focussed on how many young Muslims were leading double lives. One set of values at school and another out of school, leading to much confusion and identity crisis.

The second speaker, Brother Alyas Karmani, spoke about the benefits of a successful partnership between state and supplementary schools. He suggested that school resources such as access to the Internet could be used by supplementary schools out of hours. This would allow the madrasahs to offer an enhanced educational experience at little additional cost.

One of the key points debated by participants was how Muslims in Bradford could best communicate the needs of their children. It was agreed that the clear message to be communicated to decision-makers at all levels was that by helping young people practice their religion at both school and home would ultimately make Bradford a better place for all.

Some participants floated the idea of the establishment of a centralised body to represent the educational needs of Muslims in Bradford when dealing with local government. Such a body would consist of representatives from Islamic supplementary schools and other Muslims currently serving as teachers and parent governors in the state sector.
